Blackwater

By the 1860s around 5000 Thames Sailing Barges would be transporting cargo along the East Coast between Essex and Kent. From Maldon the barges would carry hay, straw and grain sixteen miles through the River Blackwater estuary into the North Sea, and South down to the River Thames and on to London.
