Marine Lake, Maldon (3188) April 2006 | Another

This is the new Marine Lake in Promenade Park, Maldon. The background silhouettes are St Mary's Church and Thames Sailing Barges at Hythe Quay on the river Blackwater Estuary.
The 14 acre Promenade Park was opened in 1895 and the first Marine Lake was formed in 1905. After a swimming accident at the lake in 2002 it was closed and has only just reopened.
Many of the kids in Maldon learnt to swim in this lake, including Jude, who with her school friend, Beverley, helped each other learn to swim here.
After nearly a hundred years of people using the lake for recreation and swimming it has been fenced off on grounds of health and safety. It's now a very large ornamental lake with a grass surround.

Thanks Stewart. The distinctive sails of the Thames Sailing Barges have been seen moored at Hythe Quay since early in the 19th century. These flat-bottomed vessels were ideal for navigating the local creeks around the peninsula. During their working life they collected produce from local farms and transported the cargoes to London. Now Maldon is one of the last remaining homes for these graceful boats.

Hello tony, Now I understand that conversation we had this morning! Lovely shot at sunset(?) white balance to cool -- 3400K? though the shift to blue and ultra-violet usually means hotter -- 6000K?
Health&Safety are always getting tougher with time - that's civilisation.
I like the silhouettes of the church and the Thames sailing barges. Isn't there a race of Thames sailing barges each year? Hopefully that will keep some of the barges afloat. robert

Hi Robert, the 'kelvin' colour temperature is a litle confusing because the 'cold' colours have the highest numbers and the 'warm' colours have the lowest numbers. Have a look at the Info on Colour Temperature at Wikepedia above + links to 'white balance' and digital cameras.

Angie, hi and thanks. The great thing about digital photography is you can keep experimenting until you get a good picture. Here, by the lake in Maldon, the light was changing rapidly after sunset and I was trying to get a balance of light. The lights in the windows and on the masts of the boats just helped to define those silhouettes.

"Pure"... so purely pure. Blue and liquid blue! .-)
