Plastic Planes
Boeing president Alan Mulally says "all future planes will be made out of composites". The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, expected next year, is being constructed using carbon fibre-reinforced plastic composites, and the future updated 737s would be using this "material of choice" in its airframe and other parts of the construction. "The goal is to get the fewest number of parts that fit together accurately, and then final assembly takes the least amount of time and has the highest quality," Mulally said.
Will architects and the construction industry be learning from the airlines approach to construction in the future? Peter Testa's Carbon Tower shows that ideas are circulating, but maybe we have another decade or two before the construction industry evolves and the 'planners' catch up. And by then the future of air travel may well be in decline as the oil runs out.

Last week we met at the Camden Arts Centre Cafe for a chat and a look at the latest exhibition, Archipeinture.
The exhibition of paintings, sculpture, and some video, represented an alienating view of architecture and we were left fairly unimpressed.
Here's a Guardian article : Concrete jumble
Empty streets, wilting cabbages and floating bow-ties ... Is this really how artists perceive urban architecture? By Adrian Searle
but
We did have a chat about reality and communication, which was so much more stimulating than the exhibition.
Does reality exist outside representation? .. or .. Is reality only a representation?

RoofTopHop
Pavlov medialab's adventurous expedition on the roofs of buildings in the center of Groningen. 'Do the RoofTopHop': during the Noorderzon festival,
15-19 august 2006
The local authorities of Groningen invited Pavlov Medialab to work out one of our ideas for developing Groningen as a creative city. The case involves the exploration and development of city rooftops. The research question is: how can a creative city be built on this?
